Introduction

GREMLIN’s planned 90-day “pattern-of-life” test is one of the most significant implementation choices in the U.S. government’s emerging approach to automated UAP detection. Rather than immediately treating unusual sensor returns as potential unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), the system is being deployed to watch a real-world national security location long enough to learn what ordinary activity looks like first. According to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), GREMLIN successfully collected data during a March 2024 test event and its next step is a 90-day pattern-of-life collection at a national security site. 90 Day Test illustration 1 The importance of that decision is easy to miss. A detector cannot reliably identify anomalies until it understands normality. For an automated instrumented UFO detection system, the baseline is often more valuable than the alert itself. The 90-day collection period is designed to teach GREMLIN the recurring patterns of aircraft, wildlife, weather effects, satellites, radio-frequency activity, and sensor artefacts that might otherwise be mistaken for something unusual. What Pattern-of-Life Collection Means at a Security Site

In surveillance, intelligence, and security operations, “pattern of life” refers to the systematic observation of an environment over time to identify recurring behaviours and expected activity. The goal is not to find anomalies immediately but to establish a statistically meaningful picture of what happens on an ordinary day, week, and month.

AARO director Jon Kosloski explained that the GREMLIN deployment was chosen specifically to build a baseline. He noted that current UAP reporting contains geographic and reporting biases because many reports originate near national security facilities and depend heavily on human observers. The purpose of the deployment is to understand what “normal” looks like around such sites before drawing conclusions about unusual events. The location itself was selected because it offers environmental variety and has previously generated UAP reports. AARO deliberately declined to identify the site publicly because officials wanted an unbiased test and did not want outside parties conducting intentional flyovers or experiments against the system. This makes the deployment fundamentally different from traditional UAP investigations. Instead of reacting to a reported sighting after the fact, GREMLIN continuously observes an area and accumulates context before any future event occurs.

Normal Signals GREMLIN Needs to Learn First

One reason UAP cases often remain unresolved is that many observations occur in complex environments where ordinary phenomena can appear unusual when viewed through a single sensor. GREMLIN was designed as a multi-sensor platform precisely because these environments are crowded with potential sources of confusion. During early testing, officials reported that the system detected birds, bats, solar-related effects, and numerous objects in Earth orbit. Those detections were not failures; they were part of the learning process. Understanding such recurring signatures helps analysts distinguish genuine anomalies from expected activity. Over a 90-day period, GREMLIN can observe:

  • Commercial and military aircraft operating under different conditions.
  • Drones and unmanned aerial systems.
  • Birds, bats, and other wildlife.
  • Weather-driven radar and optical effects.
  • Satellite passes and orbital reflections.
  • Solar and atmospheric phenomena.
  • Radio-frequency emissions from legitimate sources.
  • Sensor artefacts produced by geometry, glare, or environmental conditions. A three-month window is long enough to capture changes across weekdays, weekends, operational schedules, seasonal weather patterns, and varying daylight conditions. A short deployment might reveal only a fragment of local behaviour, whereas a longer observation period provides a richer model of routine activity.

Why Ninety Days Is More Useful Than a Short Demonstration

The March 2024 test demonstrated that GREMLIN could collect data successfully, but proving functionality is not the same as proving analytical value. A short trial can show that sensors work. A pattern-of-life deployment shows whether they can separate meaningful anomalies from background clutter. For automated detection systems, false positives are often the biggest operational problem. A radar track, infrared signature, or optical observation may appear unusual in isolation. Once weeks of historical observations exist, however, analysts can determine whether similar signatures occur routinely.

A ninety-day baseline also helps identify recurring events that initially look suspicious. For example:

  • A satellite reflection may appear anomalous on a single night but reveal a predictable schedule over several weeks.
  • A migratory bird route may generate recurring radar returns during specific periods.
  • Particular atmospheric conditions may repeatedly create optical distortions.
  • Certain maintenance or operational activities may create sensor signatures that appear unusual to outside observers.

Without historical context, each event risks becoming a standalone mystery. With a baseline, many can be categorised rapidly.

How a Baseline Changes Later UAP Decisions

The most important consequence of the GREMLIN test is that it changes the evidentiary standard for future UAP investigations.

Historically, many UAP reports begin with a witness observing something unexpected. Investigators then attempt to reconstruct conditions after the event, often with incomplete information. GREMLIN reverses that process. It gathers continuous environmental data first and asks questions later.

When a future alert occurs, analysts can compare it against the preceding ninety days of observations. Instead of asking, “What was this object?”, they can first ask:

  • Has the system seen something similar before?
  • Does the object match an established local pattern?
  • Do radar, optical, infrared, and radio-frequency sensors agree?
  • Is the signature consistent with known aircraft, drones, wildlife, satellites, or atmospheric effects?
  • Is the event genuinely outside the site’s established baseline?

That shift matters because anomaly detection is fundamentally comparative. An event becomes interesting not because it is strange in isolation but because it departs from a well-characterised normal state.

Kosloski explicitly described the deployment as an effort to establish that normal state, with plans to expand baseline studies beyond national security locations in the future. Why the Test Matters for Automated Instrumented UFO Detectors

GREMLIN’s 90-day deployment highlights a broader lesson for automated UFO detection systems: sensors alone do not solve the UAP problem. Context does.

The public discussion around UAP often focuses on dramatic captures, unusual videos, or unexplained tracks. GREMLIN’s pattern-of-life programme instead emphasises environmental understanding. The system’s value lies not merely in detecting objects but in learning the ordinary operating conditions of a location well enough to recognise when something truly departs from them. For government UAP monitoring, that represents a move from reactive investigation toward continuous measurement. The 90-day test is therefore not simply a field trial of hardware. It is an experiment in building the reference dataset that future anomaly judgments will depend upon. If successful, the baseline it creates could become the foundation for deciding which future observations are routine, which are misidentifications, and which remain genuinely unexplained.
