Within Triangulation
Are both cameras seeing the same thing?
Triangulation fails if one camera tracks a bird while another tracks an aircraft, satellite, or meteor.

Introduction
Multi-site triangulation only works if every observing station is tracking the same physical object at the same moment. This sounds obvious, but in practice it is one of the hardest parts of an automated instrumented UFO or UAP detection system. A bird crossing one camera’s field of view can coincide in time with an aircraft in another camera. A satellite may appear close to the same line of sight as a meteor. If software mistakenly treats these unrelated objects as one target, the resulting triangulation can produce an entirely fictional position, altitude or speed.
For this reason, object matching is not a minor software detail but a fundamental scientific requirement. NASA’s independent UAP study highlighted the need for calibrated sensors, accurate metadata and multiple measurements precisely because reliable conclusions depend on correctly associating observations across instruments rather than simply collecting more videos. Why false pairings happen
Two cameras separated by hundreds of metres or several kilometres do not see the sky in exactly the same way. Objects appear against different star backgrounds, travel at different apparent speeds, and may be visible in only one station for part of their path because of trees, buildings or cloud.
Several situations commonly create false matches:
- Coincidental timing. Two unrelated objects happen to appear in different cameras at nearly the same time.
- Crowded airspace. Multiple aircraft or satellites occupy similar regions of the sky simultaneously.
- Different sensor sensitivities. One camera detects a faint satellite while another only records a brighter aircraft nearby.
- Occlusion. One station temporarily loses the object behind cloud or obstacles, making track continuity uncertain.
- Wide-angle lens distortion. Small calibration errors near the edge of a fisheye image can shift apparent positions enough to encourage incorrect associations if uncertainty is ignored. [arXiv+2ResearchGate]arxiv.orgThe Scientific Investigation of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Using Multimodal Ground-Based ObservatoriesMay 29, 2023…
The danger is that triangulation software will always return some mathematical solution unless explicit quality controls reject implausible pairings. A precise-looking three-dimensional track is therefore not automatically a trustworthy one.
Track features that help matching
Automated systems reduce false pairings by comparing many characteristics simultaneously instead of relying only on timestamp agreement.
Time consistency
The first filter is accurate synchronisation. Cameras using GPS-disciplined clocks or similarly precise timing can compare detections within milliseconds. If one candidate appears significantly earlier or later than another after accounting for geometry, they are unlikely to represent the same object. NASA identifies accurate metadata and multiple calibrated measurements as essential foundations for this type of analysis. Direction and predicted geometry
Once camera calibration converts image pixels into viewing directions, software can ask whether two lines of sight could reasonably intersect in physical space.
Useful tests include:
- whether the sightlines come close enough to intersect within expected uncertainty;
- whether the implied altitude falls within physically reasonable limits;
- whether consecutive intersections form a smooth trajectory rather than erratic jumps.
If matching requires impossible geometry, the candidate association is rejected before any velocity estimates are calculated.
Motion behaviour
Objects maintain characteristic motion patterns over consecutive frames.
Algorithms compare features such as:
- apparent angular velocity;
- direction of travel;
- changes in brightness;
- persistence over multiple frames;
- acceleration implied by successive measurements.
A bird typically shows irregular motion and brightness fluctuations caused by wingbeats, while satellites generally move smoothly at nearly constant angular rates. Aircraft often exhibit steady motion combined with navigation lights or anti-collision flashes. Meteors brighten and disappear rapidly along nearly straight atmospheric paths. Considering these signatures together makes accidental matches much less likely than comparing position alone. Statistical association rather than simple nearest neighbour
Modern multi-camera tracking research treats correspondence as a probabilistic problem rather than asking which object is merely closest in another image. Multiple candidate tracks are scored according to timing, geometry, motion consistency and uncertainty, with ambiguous matches discarded instead of forced. This approach has become standard in broader multi-camera tracking because incorrect identity assignment rapidly degrades three-dimensional reconstruction. epb.bibl.th-koeln.de+2Heriot-Watt Research Portal [epb.bibl.th-koeln.de]epb.bibl.th-koeln.deMulti-Camera Tracking (MTMCT) and Re-Identification,Multi-Target Multi-Camera Tracking and Re-Identification…June 27, 2025 — by L Uckermann · 2024 — This research project provides a comp…
How aircraft and satellite checks reduce mistakes
The most effective object matching systems do not rely solely on image analysis. They compare observations against independent external data describing known traffic.
For aircraft, the primary reference is Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B), which provides reported aircraft positions for most commercial flights. If a detected track closely matches an ADS-B trajectory after accounting for camera geometry and timing, the event can usually be classified without invoking unusual explanations.
Satellite databases serve a similar role. Predicted orbital positions allow many moving lights to be identified automatically before they enter any anomaly analysis pipeline.
Meteor networks have demonstrated the value of this layered approach for years. Their software combines timing, calibrated camera geometry and cross-station trajectory consistency to ensure that two stations genuinely observed the same meteor before calculating atmospheric paths. Large international networks process enormous numbers of detections while rejecting many false associations through these consistency checks. The Galileo Project follows the same philosophy in its observatory design. Published descriptions emphasise triangulation alongside external information sources and multiple sensing modalities. Recent commissioning work also uses ADS-B aircraft positions to calibrate cameras and establish a baseline catalogue of ordinary aerial traffic before searching for genuine outliers. During five months of observations, many initially unusual trajectories were explained after further review, illustrating why known-object filtering is an integral part of the pipeline rather than an afterthought. Why ambiguous matches should be rejected
A common misconception is that every detection should produce a triangulated solution. In reality, scientifically robust systems often prefer no solution over an unreliable one.
Good quality-control rules include rejecting pairings when:
- multiple equally plausible counterparts exist;
- timing differences exceed calibrated uncertainty;
- reconstructed trajectories require unrealistic accelerations;
- confidence scores fall below predetermined thresholds;
- external databases strongly support different object identities.
Rejecting uncertain matches inevitably reduces the number of reconstructed events, but it greatly improves the credibility of those that remain. This conservative approach aligns with the broader scientific recommendation that UAP investigations should prioritise measurement quality and reproducibility over maximising the number of reported anomalies.
