What Should Be Inside a UAP Event File?

A credible UAP detector release needs more than a clip: it needs sensor records, calibration, timing, context, and processing history.

Introduction

A public UAP event file should contain enough information for an independent analyst to determine not only what was recorded, but how it was recorded, what else was happening at the time, and whether the result can be reproduced from the original data. A dramatic video clip alone rarely meets that standard. Compression, missing timestamps, undocumented image processing, unknown camera settings and the absence of corroborating measurements can all make an apparently unusual observation impossible to evaluate scientifically.

Event Package illustration 1 This emphasis on complete evidence packages reflects the direction taken by modern UAP research rather than any assumption about what the object ultimately was. NASA’s 2023 Independent Study Team concluded that UAP investigations are limited by poor sensor calibration, inadequate metadata, insufficient multi-sensor observations and the absence of baseline data. Likewise, the U.S. All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) has publicly noted that some released imagery cannot be conclusively analysed because corroborating telemetry or multi-modal sensor data are unavailable. Original sensor records and surrounding context

The most valuable component of any public release is the original observation itself, preserved as closely as possible to the form produced by the instrument.

Rather than publishing only a short edited clip, a credible event package should include:

  • Original or minimally processed image frames or video.
  • The highest available bit depth and resolution.
  • Uncompressed or losslessly compressed files where practical.
  • Sensor output before enhancement, stabilisation or artificial sharpening.
  • Several minutes of recording before and after the detected event.

The surrounding footage is often as important as the anomaly itself. It allows independent researchers to examine camera behaviour, changing weather, aircraft traffic, autofocus behaviour, sensor noise and background objects. Many apparent anomalies become understandable only after comparing them with ordinary frames recorded immediately before or after the event.

If multiple instruments recorded the same event, each dataset should be released independently rather than merged into a composite product. Separate records allow others to verify whether different sensors genuinely agree.

Calibration, timing and pointing geometry

Without calibration data, even excellent imagery can be difficult to interpret.

Every public event package should therefore include documentation describing the observing instrument itself, including:

  • Sensor model and configuration.
  • Lens focal length and field of view.
  • Pixel scale.
  • Exposure time, gain and frame rate.
  • Spectral band or wavelength.
  • Detector saturation limits.
  • Known artefacts or maintenance history.

Equally important is accurate geometry.

A release should document:

  • Exact observation time with stated clock accuracy.
  • Time synchronisation method (for example GPS-disciplined timing).
  • Geographic coordinates of the observing station where disclosure is appropriate.
  • Camera pointing direction.
  • Elevation and azimuth.
  • Whether the mount was fixed or tracking.
  • Any movement of the platform during acquisition.

This information allows independent analysts to reconstruct viewing geometry, compare the observation with astronomical catalogues, satellite ephemerides, aircraft tracks and meteor databases, and estimate whether an object’s apparent motion could result from camera movement rather than the target itself. NASA specifically identifies calibration and metadata as prerequisites for reliable scientific interpretation because apparent anomalies can disappear once sensor characteristics are properly understood. Processing history should be fully documented

Modern automated detectors typically process observations before a human ever reviews them. That processing history should itself become part of the evidence.

Useful documentation includes:

  • Detection software version.
  • Machine-learning model version if one was used.
  • Trigger thresholds.
  • Image filters applied.
  • Compression steps.
  • Noise reduction algorithms.
  • Frame interpolation.
  • Manual edits or annotations.
  • Any changes made after the initial detection.

A simple processing log makes it possible for another researcher to repeat the same workflow from the original files and determine whether the reported anomaly survives independent processing.

If artificial intelligence classified the event, the release should distinguish clearly between the raw observation and the model’s interpretation. Classification scores should not be presented as physical measurements.

Context matters as much as the anomaly

A convincing event package explains the observing environment, not only the unusual object.

Relevant contextual information includes:

  • Local weather observations.
  • Cloud cover.
  • Wind profiles.
  • Visibility.
  • Atmospheric turbulence.
  • Moon phase.
  • Astronomical conditions.
  • Nearby lightning.
  • Air traffic information where publicly available. [war.gov]war.govthe department of defense launches the all domain anomaly resolution office webThe Department of Defense Launches the All-domain…31 Aug 2023 — This website will serve as a one-stop shop for all publicly available…
  • Satellite overpasses.
  • Known launches or re-entry events.
  • Local sources of illumination.

Baseline information is equally valuable. A detector operating continuously should show what an ordinary night at the same location normally looks like.

For example, releasing examples of common aircraft, satellites, birds, insects, clouds and sensor artefacts recorded under similar conditions gives reviewers a direct comparison rather than forcing them to rely on generic assumptions. NASA argues that building such baseline datasets is essential because an observation can only be judged “unusual” relative to well-characterised normal conditions. Negative sensor results are evidence too

An overlooked part of scientific reporting is documenting what did not happen.

If additional sensors were operating, the package should state whether they:

  • Detected the object.
  • Failed to detect it.
  • Were outside their operating range.
  • Were temporarily unavailable.
  • Recorded conflicting information.

Negative observations often constrain possible explanations.

For example:

  • A bright optical object not appearing on an infrared sensor suggests one class of explanations.
  • A radar return without an optical counterpart suggests another.
  • An object visible from only one of several nearby stations may indicate a local artefact rather than a distant physical object.

Publishing these negative findings prevents selective reporting and allows independent analysts to evaluate the complete observational picture.

Chain of custody and reproducibility

Scientific confidence depends on demonstrating that the released files are authentic and unchanged.

A public package should therefore include:

  • File creation times.
  • Cryptographic hashes of original files.
  • Version history.
  • Any redactions that have been applied. [en.wikisource.org]en.wikisource.orgPage:UAP Independent Study Teamwikisource.orgPage:UAP Independent Study Team - Final Report.pdf/1512 Nov 2023 — Indeed, several apparent UAP have been demonstrated to b…
  • Reasons for withheld information.
  • Contact information for responsible investigators where appropriate.

The package should also distinguish clearly between:

  • Original observations.
  • Derived measurements.
  • Interpretive conclusions.

That separation allows future researchers to revisit the evidence even if analytical methods improve.

Why complete event packages matter

Many long-running debates over UAP evidence persist not because the imagery is especially compelling, but because the supporting information is incomplete. AARO has explicitly stated that some publicly released cases cannot be conclusively evaluated because corroborating telemetry or multi-modal sensor data are missing. In those situations, analysts cannot reliably distinguish between a genuine physical object and a sensor artefact, regardless of how unusual the imagery appears. [AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryHowever, due to the absence of corroborating telemetry or multi-modal sensor data, AARO cannot determine whether the obser…

A well-designed public event package reduces that ambiguity. Instead of asking observers to trust an interpretation, it provides enough raw evidence, metadata, calibration information, environmental context and processing documentation for others to test the same claim independently. That shift—from isolated video clips to transparent, reproducible event files—is one of the most important implementation steps for automated instrumented UAP detector networks seeking scientific credibility.
