Introduction

A UFO clip can only support careful analysis if investigators know exactly where it came from and what happened to it before anyone else saw it. In automated instrumented UFO detector networks, this documented history is known as the chain of custody. It records how the observation moved from the original sensor to archived storage, through any processing steps, and finally into any published image or video.

Custody illustration 1 This matters because a striking public clip is often not the original observation. It may be a compressed export, a cropped frame, a colour-enhanced image or a screen recording. Without documentation showing how each version relates to the raw data, analysts cannot tell whether they are evaluating the sensor’s actual measurement or a derivative created for easier viewing. NASA’s independent UAP study highlighted that poor sensor metadata and inadequate calibration already limit scientific analysis. A robust chain of custody extends that principle by documenting not only what the sensor recorded, but also what happened to the record afterwards. From raw capture to public clip

For an automated UFO detection system, the raw sensor output is the primary evidence. Everything published afterwards should be traceable back to that original capture.

A well-documented chain of custody typically records:

  • the exact sensor that made the observation
  • the original file identifier
  • precise timestamps
  • where and how the data were stored
  • every transfer between storage systems
  • every processing step that produced later versions
  • the identity of the software or operator responsible for each change.

This approach is borrowed from digital forensics, where chain of custody documents who handled evidence, when it was transferred and why. The purpose is not merely administrative; it allows independent reviewers to verify that the evidence being examined is the same evidence originally collected. For UFO detector networks, this distinction becomes especially important because public-facing material is often intentionally simplified. A research archive may contain multi-spectral imagery, radar returns, weather data and calibration files, while the public only sees a short MP4 clip extracted from one camera. Without documented provenance linking the two, confidence in later analysis falls sharply.

Processing logs, versions and edits

Processing does not automatically make a record unreliable. In many cases it makes the observation easier to interpret. The crucial question is whether every change is documented.

Common processing steps include:

  • correcting sensor bias or dead pixels
  • adjusting brightness or contrast
  • stabilising video
  • synchronising multiple cameras
  • combining infrared and visible-light imagery
  • compressing files for publication
  • cropping the frame around the object of interest.

Each of these operations changes the data in some way. A custody record should therefore identify:

  • the original file
  • the derived file
  • the software version used
  • the processing parameters
  • the date and operator or automated workflow responsible.

This allows later investigators to reproduce the published result from the raw observation or, if necessary, ignore the processed version and return to the original measurement.

Modern digital evidence guidance places strong emphasis on preserving original files while documenting every derived version. Digital files are easy to alter, intentionally or accidentally, making preservation of integrity a central concern. How provenance prevents stronger claims from weaker files

One of the most common mistakes in public UFO discussions is treating every copy of a clip as equally authoritative.

Consider three versions of the same observation:

  1. The raw detector output stored immediately after capture.
  2. A calibrated version used by researchers.
  3. A compressed social-media upload with overlays and subtitles.

Only the first is the original measurement. The second may be scientifically valid if every processing step is documented and reproducible. The third may still illustrate the event but should not be treated as equivalent evidence because compression, cropping or editing may have removed information needed for analysis.

Without provenance, later viewers may unknowingly make stronger claims from the weakest version of the data. Chain of custody prevents this by clearly distinguishing between evidence and presentation.

This distinction is recognised in both digital forensic practice and emerging UAP research. The documented source and handling history of visual evidence is considered essential for interpretation because metadata, processing history and sensor context determine what conclusions can reasonably be drawn. A practical policy for automated UFO detector networks

For an automated detection network, chain of custody is best viewed as a governance requirement rather than an optional technical feature. Every observation should carry enough information that another analyst can independently reconstruct its history.

A practical policy includes:

  • preserving immutable raw sensor files
  • assigning each observation a permanent unique identifier
  • recording cryptographic hashes to detect later alteration
  • maintaining automated audit logs for every access or modification
  • retaining all intermediate processing products rather than overwriting them
  • clearly labelling public releases as derivative products
  • publishing sufficient provenance metadata so independent researchers know exactly which version they are examining.

These practices do not prove that an observation depicts an unusual object. Instead, they ensure that confidence in the evidence is based on documented handling rather than trust in the individual or organisation releasing it.

Why custody records strengthen scientific credibility

Most UFO reports remain difficult to resolve because the underlying data are incomplete rather than because they are inherently mysterious. NASA’s UAP study argues that better-calibrated sensors, richer metadata and systematic data collection are necessary for scientific progress. A documented chain of custody complements those recommendations by preserving the history of every observation from capture to publication. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…

A clip that survives the sharing chain with its provenance intact becomes far more valuable than one that merely appears impressive. Researchers can verify whether they are studying the original measurement, reproduce any published processing, compare independent analyses and identify where uncertainty enters the record. Rather than making extraordinary claims stronger, chain of custody helps prevent ordinary file handling from being mistaken for extraordinary evidence.
