Introduction
A useful UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) event package is far more than a video clip. Its purpose is to allow an independent reviewer to reconstruct exactly what was measured, how it was measured, what the observing system was doing at the time, and what ordinary explanations were available before any conclusions are drawn. This approach follows the central recommendation of NASA’s 2023 Independent Study Team: the biggest obstacle to understanding UAP is not a lack of reports, but a lack of complete, calibrated and well-documented observations. Current investigations are often weakened by poor sensor calibration, missing metadata, incomplete contextual information and the absence of independent measurements. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Independent Study Team ReportNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — At present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, th…
For automated instrumented UFO detectors, the event package therefore becomes the fundamental scientific product. Instead of asking whether a recorded object is extraordinary, it preserves enough evidence that later investigators can determine whether the observation was an aircraft, satellite, balloon, drone, bird, atmospheric phenomenon, sensor artefact or a genuinely unresolved event.
Core fields every event package needs
The strongest event packages combine the observation itself with everything required to reproduce the measurement. Every recorded event should include four closely related groups of information.
The observation
This is the primary evidence collected by the detector:
- Original, uncompressed image or video files.
- Raw sensor output where available (rather than processed images only).
- Audio recordings if collected.
- Time-series measurements from all participating sensors.
- Detection confidence and trigger information.
Raw data are especially valuable because future processing techniques may extract information that compressed or enhanced imagery has permanently discarded.
Time and location
Every measurement should be tied to an accurate reference frame.
Typical fields include:
- Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) timestamp.
- Clock accuracy and synchronisation source (GPS, network time or local oscillator).
- Geographic coordinates.
- Sensor altitude.
- Sensor pointing direction (azimuth and elevation).
- Platform attitude if the detector is mounted on a moving vehicle.
Without reliable timing and geometry, apparent motion cannot be reconstructed with confidence.
Instrument state
NASA repeatedly emphasises that measurements cannot be interpreted properly without knowing the condition of the instrument that produced them. Useful records therefore include:
- Camera model and sensor type.
- Lens focal length.
- Zoom position.
- Exposure time.
- Gain or ISO.
- Frame rate.
- Focus setting.
- Field of view.
- Detector temperature where applicable.
- Software and firmware versions.
- Operating mode.
- Any active image stabilisation or tracking system.
These values explain how the detector transformed incoming light into the recorded image. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Independent Study Team ReportNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — At present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, th…
Observer and system information
Automated systems should also record operational details such as:
- Detector identifier.
- Site identifier.
- Operator (if attended).
- Trigger type.
- Sensor health status.
- Storage integrity checks.
- Event identification number.
These administrative fields help preserve traceability throughout the lifetime of the investigation.
Why raw data and processing history matter
A processed video may look clearer to a viewer while actually containing less scientific information.
Many cameras automatically apply:
- image sharpening,
- digital stabilisation,
- compression,
- denoising,
- artificial intelligence enhancement,
- colour correction,
- contrast adjustment, or
- interpolation.
Each processing step alters the recorded signal. If only the final processed clip survives, later investigators cannot determine whether an apparent feature originated in the sky or inside the processing pipeline.
A robust event package therefore preserves both:
- the untouched original data; and
- a complete processing history.
That history should document every transformation applied after acquisition, including:
- software version,
- processing order,
- enhancement settings,
- calibration files used,
- export format,
- checksum or cryptographic hash of the original files.
This creates an auditable chain of custody. Independent reviewers can repeat the processing, compare alternative methods or verify that no accidental or intentional alteration occurred.
This principle is common across scientific imaging disciplines, including astronomy, Earth observation and remote sensing, where raw measurements remain the authoritative record while processed products are treated as derived data. Calibration records should travel with every event
Calibration is not a one-time activity performed when a detector is built. It is evidence about how accurately the instrument was operating when the event occurred.
A complete package should therefore include references to:
- most recent calibration date,
- calibration method,
- calibration targets used,
- known measurement uncertainty,
- optical distortion model,
- sensor noise characteristics,
- bad-pixel maps,
- detector alignment,
- pointing calibration,
- maintenance history where relevant.
If calibration files are stored separately, the event should include version identifiers so investigators know exactly which calibration applies.
NASA specifically notes that several apparent UAP have later been identified as sensor artefacts once calibration information and metadata were examined properly. The calibration record therefore becomes part of the observation itself rather than optional documentation. How aircraft, satellite and weather context travels with the event
Even an excellent camera rarely provides enough information by itself.
A scientifically useful event package automatically bundles external context collected at the same time as the observation so later analysts do not have to reconstruct it from incomplete historical records.
Important contextual layers include:
- Nearby aircraft positions from civil surveillance data such as ADS-B where available.
- Published flight restrictions.
- Satellite pass predictions.
- Astronomical information including the Moon, bright planets and known bright stars.
- Meteor shower activity.
- Lightning detection data.
- Weather observations.
- Wind profiles.
- Cloud cover.
- Temperature.
- Humidity.
- Atmospheric pressure.
- Aerosol conditions.
- Solar activity where relevant.
The value lies not in proving an explanation automatically but in allowing investigators to eliminate ordinary possibilities using data recorded at the correct time.
Because many contextual datasets are continuously updated or overwritten, preserving snapshots alongside the event avoids later uncertainty about what information was available during the observation.
Multi-sensor observations belong in one package
NASA identifies multiple independent measurements as one of the largest improvements needed for future UAP studies. A modern detector network should therefore treat a single event as a collection of synchronised observations rather than separate files. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Independent Study Team ReportNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — At present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, th…
A combined package might contain:
- visible-light imagery,
- infrared imagery,
- all-sky camera data,
- spectroscopic measurements,
- radar observations if available,
- radio-frequency monitoring,
- acoustic sensors,
- magnetic field measurements,
- environmental sensors.
Each dataset should share the same event identifier and synchronised timestamps so investigators can compare observations frame by frame.
Agreement between independent sensors generally increases confidence that an observed phenomenon exists outside any single instrument. Conversely, disagreement can reveal detector faults, reflections or processing artefacts.
Recording what the detector was doing before and after the event
An isolated clip often begins after the trigger and ends before the phenomenon disappears.
A better event package includes surrounding context such as:
- several seconds or minutes before detection,
- several seconds or minutes after detection,
- detector idle state,
- background sky conditions,
- continuous tracking logs,
- trigger thresholds,
- any changes in operating mode during the event.
Pre-trigger recording can reveal whether an object entered gradually, emerged from behind cloud, or was already present before automatic detection.
Post-event recording helps determine whether an apparent disappearance resulted from the object leaving the field of view, cloud obscuration or detector behaviour.
Designing the package for later review rather than immediate judgement
The most valuable UAP event package is designed with future analysis in mind rather than immediate interpretation.
Instead of asking reviewers to trust a dramatic image, it provides sufficient evidence to reconstruct the entire observation:
- the original measurements,
- the detector configuration,
- calibration information,
- processing history,
- environmental conditions,
- nearby aircraft and satellite context,
- synchronised observations from other sensors,
- complete timing and location information.
This approach directly addresses the data-quality shortcomings identified by NASA. Whether an event is eventually explained as an ordinary object, a sensor artefact or remains unresolved, a complete event package allows that conclusion to be reached through reproducible analysis rather than speculation.
