Introduction

A reposted UFO clip may show the same pixels as the original recording, but it often no longer contains the same evidence. By the time a video has been uploaded, downloaded, cropped, screen-recorded, reposted and shared across social platforms, much of the information needed to test what happened can be gone. Time records, camera settings, device information, frame history, audio quality and even clues about whether the file was edited may be lost or altered during the process. For automated instrumented UFO detectors, this distinction is critical: science depends on preserving measurements, not just images. NASA’s UAP study emphasised that investigations are frequently limited by missing sensor metadata and poor data quality, making reliable interpretation difficult. Original Files illustration 1 Within the broader problem of metadata gaps, original files matter because they preserve the chain of evidence. A reposted clip may still be interesting, but it is usually a weaker dataset than the file that came directly from the recording device.

What Changes When a Clip Is Copied or Cropped

The most important difference between an original file and a reposted clip is that the original retains context.

Modern cameras and phones record far more than visible imagery. Video files can contain timestamps, device identifiers, frame rates, resolution details, encoding settings and other metadata that help investigators reconstruct how a recording was made. Metadata analysis is widely used in digital forensics because it can reveal origin, timing and authenticity information that is invisible during normal viewing. When a UFO video is reposted, several things may happen:

  • The original filename may disappear.
  • Creation timestamps may be replaced.
  • Camera and device information may be removed.
  • GPS and location-related information may be stripped.
  • Audio may be recompressed.
  • The file may be converted into a completely new video rather than a direct copy.

Importantly, many social platforms do not merely remove metadata from the original file. They generate a new version optimised for storage and streaming. The resulting upload is effectively a different file with a different technical history. [Magnet Forensics]magnetforensics.comgetting to the source understanding metadata removal on social mediaMagnet ForensicsGetting to the…

For UFO analysis, that loss matters because investigators often need to answer basic questions:

  • Exactly when was the object recorded?
  • Which camera recorded it?
  • Was digital zoom active?
  • Was stabilisation applied?
  • What was the original frame rate?
  • Was the video edited before publication?

The original file often contains clues that help answer these questions. The repost usually does not.

How Compression and Edits Hide Useful Clues

A common misconception is that compression only reduces image quality. In practice, it can also erase evidence.

Most social-media platforms re-encode uploaded videos using their own compression systems. Re-encoding changes the structure of the file, modifies frame relationships and can introduce visual artefacts that were not present in the original recording. Researchers in video forensics have shown that platform-specific processing leaves identifiable traces, meaning that a social-media copy may differ substantially from the source file. This creates several problems for UFO investigations.

Apparent Shapes Can Change

Small bright objects are especially vulnerable to compression artefacts. A distant aircraft light, satellite reflection or bright planet can appear to pulse, deform or change shape after repeated compression cycles. Compression algorithms prioritise storage efficiency rather than scientific accuracy. Frame-Level Information Can Be Lost

Investigators sometimes analyse individual frames to estimate motion, identify blinking navigation lights or compare object behaviour across consecutive images. Re-encoding may alter frame timing or remove subtle details needed for that analysis. Evidence of Editing Becomes Harder to Detect

Digital-forensics specialists frequently inspect metadata, encoding histories and file structures to identify cuts, edits and recompression events. These traces are easier to evaluate when the original recording is available. Once a clip has passed through multiple platforms, distinguishing original characteristics from platform-generated changes becomes much harder. In other words, a reposted UFO clip may not merely contain less information. It may contain new artefacts that can be mistaken for evidence.

Why Chain of Custody Matters Even for Civilian Sightings

The phrase “chain of custody” is usually associated with criminal investigations, but the principle applies equally to unusual aerial observations.

Chain of custody means maintaining a documented record of how evidence moved from collection to analysis. If investigators cannot determine where a file came from, who handled it or what modifications occurred along the way, confidence in the evidence decreases. Digital-forensics guidance consistently treats preservation of original files as a core requirement for reliable analysis. [SWGDE - SWGDE+2computerforensicslab.co.uk]swgde.orgBest Practices for Digital Forensic Video AnalysisSWGDEBest Practices for Digital Forensic Video Analysis - SWGDEForensic Video Analysis (FVA) is defined as the scientific examina…

A useful illustration comes from outside the UFO field. In 2025, forensic experts examining video metadata associated with publicly released surveillance footage identified evidence that the file had been assembled and exported through editing software rather than being a direct untouched recording. The debate was not primarily about what appeared on screen; it centred on metadata, file history and chain-of-custody questions. [WIRED]wired.comMetadata Shows the FBI's 'Raw' Jeffrey Epstein Prison Video Was Likely ModifiedDepartment of Justice recently released nearly 11 hours of surveillance footage from Jeffrey Epstein's prison area, labeled as "raw" vide…

The lesson for UFO investigations is straightforward. If analysts receive only a reposted clip, they often cannot determine whether unusual features originated in the scene, in the camera, during editing or during platform processing.

Why Automated Detector Networks Depend on Original Data

This issue becomes even more important for automated instrumented UFO detector systems.

Unlike casual smartphone recordings, a scientific detector network is designed to produce measurements. The image is only one component of the dataset. Equally important are:

  • Precise timestamps.
  • Sensor calibration records. [science.nasa.gov]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…
  • Camera orientation.
  • Exposure settings.
  • Environmental conditions.
  • Multiple synchronized observations.
  • Raw or minimally processed files.

NASA’s UAP study repeatedly stressed the importance of calibrated sensors, multiple measurements and complete metadata because unusual observations can sometimes be explained once the characteristics of the sensor are properly understood. The report notes that some apparent anomalies have been identified as sensor artefacts after careful metadata and calibration review. [NASA Science+2NASA]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…

An automated detector network therefore gains value by preserving the information that social-media workflows tend to destroy. If a system records an unusual object, investigators should be able to retrieve:

  • The original video.
  • The original sensor metadata. [science.nasa.gov]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…
  • Nearby sensor observations.
  • Environmental measurements.
  • Logs showing that the file has not been altered.

The goal is not merely to capture something strange. It is to preserve enough evidence that future analysts can test competing explanations.

What a Detector Network Should Preserve First

For an evidence-focused UFO detection system, preservation priorities are surprisingly practical.

The highest-value data are usually:

  1. Original files before any editing or conversion.
  2. Accurate timestamps synchronised to a trusted clock.
  3. Sensor metadata describing camera settings and operating state.
  4. Calibration information showing how the instrument performs.
  5. Location and pointing information for geometric reconstruction.
  6. Audit logs and file hashes that demonstrate integrity over time.
  7. Neighbouring frames and surrounding context, not only the most dramatic segment.

A cropped ten-second clip may be compelling to watch, but the surrounding minutes often contain more scientific value. Background stars, aircraft lights, changing focus, camera movement and environmental conditions frequently provide the clues needed to identify what is being observed.

For this reason, automated UFO detector projects should treat the original recording as the primary evidence and any reposted version as a derivative copy. The image may attract attention, but the metadata, calibration records and unbroken file history are usually what determine whether an unusual sighting can be analysed scientifically at all.
