Introduction

A magnetometer at a single UAP detector site can record changes in the Earth’s magnetic field, but it cannot by itself determine whether those changes are unusual. The essential reference is a network of established geomagnetic observatories that continuously measure regional magnetic conditions using calibrated instruments and well-documented quality-control procedures. Comparing a detector’s readings against these baseline records helps distinguish genuine regional geomagnetic activity from sensor drift, local electrical interference, installation problems, or instrument faults. This comparison is a governance issue as much as a technical one: extraordinary interpretations require evidence that a signal survives independent verification rather than appearing only on one instrument. NASA’s independent UAP study similarly emphasised that reliable anomaly research depends on calibrated sensors, multiple measurements, metadata and baseline data rather than isolated observations. Why one magnetometer is not enough

A magnetometer measures magnetic field changes at one location. That measurement contains a mixture of influences:

  • Natural variations caused by the Earth’s magnetic environment.
  • Local disturbances from nearby vehicles, power systems, electronic equipment or ferrous objects.
  • Instrument-related effects such as temperature sensitivity, calibration errors or gradual drift.
  • Any genuinely unusual local phenomenon.

Without an external reference, these contributions cannot be separated confidently. A magnetic spike recorded during a reported UAP sighting may simply coincide with an ordinary geomagnetic fluctuation affecting a much larger region, or it may reflect a problem unique to the detector site.

This is why professional geomagnetic monitoring relies on observatories rather than isolated sensors. Networks such as INTERMAGNET produce quality-controlled measurements with documented calibration procedures, allowing individual stations to be interpreted within a regional and global context. What baseline comparison can reveal

Baseline observatories provide several independent checks that are directly relevant to automated UAP detector networks.

Regional geomagnetic activity. If multiple observatories hundreds of kilometres apart record similar field changes at nearly the same time, the disturbance is probably part of normal geomagnetic activity driven by space weather rather than something occurring only at one detector. This prevents ordinary magnetic storms from being mistaken for site-specific anomalies. [swsc-journal.org]swsc-journal.orgThe relevance of local magnetic records when using…by E Saiz · 2021 · Cited by 9 — An important outcome of these results is that space…

Local-only disturbances. Conversely, if only the detector magnetometer records a sharp excursion while nearby observatories remain quiet, attention shifts toward local explanations. These include electrical equipment switching, passing vehicles, construction activity, nearby magnetic materials or faults within the instrument itself. A local-only signal is therefore not evidence for an unusual aerial object; instead, it identifies a measurement that requires further investigation.

Timing consistency. Observatory records also provide precise time references. If a detector reports a transient event that supposedly lasted seconds but nearby reference stations show no corresponding behaviour where one would physically be expected, investigators can test whether timing errors, clock synchronisation problems or data-processing artefacts may be responsible.

How observatory records expose drift

One of the most valuable functions of certified observatories is identifying gradual instrument drift.

Fluxgate magnetometers, commonly used for continuous monitoring, measure changes relative to a reference rather than providing permanently absolute measurements. Over time, factors such as temperature variation, mechanical movement, ageing electronics or small shifts in sensor orientation can slowly alter the baseline. Professional observatories routinely perform absolute measurements and compare them with continuous variometer data specifically to detect and correct these effects.   • spikes and electronic noise;
  • changes in the local magnetic environment.

Where another observatory is nearby, comparing independent records can also expose subtle drift or alignment problems that may not be obvious when examining only one instrument’s output. [INTERMAGNET]tech-man.intermagnet.orgINTERMAGNET Technical Reference Manual2 days ago — 20 Oct 2014 — Such comparisons can identify baseline drift in the variomete…

For an automated UAP observatory, this means that a slowly wandering baseline should not be interpreted as an accumulating magnetic anomaly. Instead, it should trigger maintenance, recalibration or inspection of the installation.

Why wide-area disturbances weaken local claims

The strongest magnetic evidence for a localised event would be difficult to reconcile with ordinary geomagnetic behaviour.

Most magnetic disturbances produced by solar activity affect broad geographical regions, with timing and amplitude that can be compared across observatory networks. During geomagnetic storms, simultaneous changes appear over many stations, although their magnitude varies with latitude and local conditions. Consequently, if a UAP detector records a magnetic excursion that closely matches regional observatory data, the simpler explanation is that both instruments observed the same natural geomagnetic event. [swsc-journal.org]swsc-journal.orgThe relevance of local magnetic records when using…by E Saiz · 2021 · Cited by 9 — An important outcome of these results is that space…

This comparison does not prove that nothing unusual occurred visually. Rather, it limits what can reasonably be claimed about the magnetic evidence. A detector cannot argue that an aerial object generated a unique magnetic disturbance if certified observatories show that the same signal was occurring across a wide area at the same time.

The converse is also important. A genuinely local magnetic event is more interesting scientifically only after ordinary regional activity has been excluded using independent observatory records.

Baselines as a governance requirement

Using observatory comparisons strengthens the credibility of detector networks because it makes claims independently testable.

A governance-oriented workflow typically asks:

  1. Was the detector operating within calibration limits?
  2. Do certified observatory records show similar behaviour at the same time?
  3. Could local interference explain the measurement?
  4. Do other sensor modalities—such as optical, infrared or radio observations—support the same event?

Only after these questions have been addressed does it become reasonable to treat a magnetic anomaly as potentially significant.

This approach mirrors broader recommendations for scientific UAP investigations. NASA’s independent study concluded that future progress depends on calibrated instrumentation, multiple independent measurements, comprehensive metadata and baseline information rather than isolated sensor readings. Likewise, multimodal UAP observatory proposals include magnetic measurements as supporting environmental data, not as standalone evidence, precisely because comparison against external reference datasets is essential for distinguishing genuine anomalies from measurement artefacts.
