Introduction

Ordinary aircraft play an unexpectedly important role in the Galileo Project’s effort to build automated, instrumented UAP observatories. Rather than treating every aircraft as unwanted background noise, Galileo uses many aircraft as known reference objects. Because commercial and many private aircraft continuously broadcast their positions, altitude and velocity through Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) systems, researchers can compare what their cameras see with where a real aircraft should appear in the sky. This provides a practical way to test camera pointing accuracy, tracking performance and sensor alignment before any claim about unusual objects is considered. [MDPI+2arXiv]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

Aircraft Checks illustration 1 The approach reflects a core Galileo principle: a system designed to identify anomalies must first prove that it can reliably identify ordinary objects. Aircraft therefore become moving calibration targets that help establish whether the observatory is measuring the sky correctly. How Aircraft Become Moving Reference Points

Galileo observatories include radio receivers capable of collecting ADS-B transmissions from nearby aircraft. These broadcasts contain information such as aircraft position, altitude and motion derived from onboard navigation systems. By receiving this data locally and synchronising it with camera observations, the observatory gains access to a large stream of independently known aerial targets. [Medium+2World Scientific]avi-loeb.medium.comCommissioning Data on Half a Million Objects in the Sky from…Airplane positions from Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast…

The key idea is straightforward:

  1. An aircraft broadcasts its position.
  2. Galileo receives that ADS-B data.
  3. The aircraft is detected in camera imagery.
  4. Software predicts where the aircraft should appear in the image.
  5. Researchers compare the prediction with the actual detected position.

If the prediction and observation match, confidence increases that the camera orientation, timing and geometric calibration are correct. If they do not match, the discrepancy may reveal a calibration problem rather than a mysterious object. [MDPI+2World Scientific]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

This process is especially useful because aircraft move across large portions of the sky. A fixed calibration target can only verify one direction, but dozens or hundreds of aircraft passing through different locations provide a continuous test of the entire observing system. Galileo researchers describe this as a novel extrinsic calibration method that uses aircraft positions collected through ADS-B data. Turning GPS Coordinates into Camera Coordinates

A central challenge for any sky-monitoring system is converting real-world positions into image positions. Galileo’s calibration framework uses the known three-dimensional location of an aircraft and projects that location into the two-dimensional image recorded by a camera. [MDPI]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

To do this reliably, the observatory must know:

  • The exact location of the observatory.
  • The orientation of each camera.
  • The camera lens characteristics.
  • The observation time.
  • The aircraft’s reported position. [worldscientific.com]worldscientific.comIntegrated Computing Platform for Detection and Tracking…by R Cloete · 2023 · Cited by 9 — ADS-B data includes the position, altitude…

Once these quantities are known, software can calculate where the aircraft should appear within a camera frame. Researchers can then measure the difference between the predicted and observed locations. Repeated comparisons across many flights allow calibration parameters to be refined and verified. [MDPI+2World Scientific]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

Galileo’s published commissioning work for its infrared camera array reports using aircraft trajectories and ADS-B information specifically to evaluate and calibrate system performance. The observatory’s development site accumulated large numbers of aircraft observations, providing a real-world test set for validation. What ADS-B Comparisons Can and Cannot Prove

ADS-B matching is powerful, but it is not a universal solution.

Aircraft Checks illustration 2

What It Can Prove

When an aircraft is detected and its ADS-B track aligns with the camera observation, researchers gain evidence that:

  • Camera pointing is correct.
  • Timing between sensors is synchronised.
  • Tracking software is functioning properly.
  • Position reconstruction is behaving as expected.
  • The observed object is very likely the identified aircraft. [MDPI+2World Scientific]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

Galileo also uses machine-learning-based object detection and tracking systems to identify aircraft automatically. Comparing those detections against ADS-B data provides a measurable way to evaluate detection efficiency and tracking accuracy. [MDPI+2ResearchGate]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

What It Cannot Prove

An ADS-B match does not automatically validate every aspect of an observation. Aircraft broadcasts can contain uncertainties, and not every aircraft carries or transmits ADS-B data. Furthermore, a successful positional match does not by itself verify every sensor in a multimodal observatory. [arXiv]arxiv.org1 Introduction12 Nov 2024 — " The Galileo Project is designing, building… ADS-B derived position estimation and inaccuracies in t…

Likewise, the absence of an ADS-B match does not immediately create an anomaly. Possible explanations include:

  • Misclassification by software.
  • Non-transmitting aircraft.
  • Birds, balloons, drones or other ordinary objects. [arXiv+2World Scientific]arxiv.org1 Introduction12 Nov 2024 — " The Galileo Project is designing, building… ADS-B derived position estimation and inaccuracies in t…

For Galileo, an unmatched observation is therefore the beginning of an investigation, not the end of one.

Monitoring Calibration Over Time

Calibration is not a one-time activity. Cameras can shift slightly because of weather, vibration, maintenance work or thermal effects. Even a small orientation change can produce significant errors when estimating positions in the sky. [MDPI]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

Galileo’s commissioning publications describe using aircraft observations to monitor for unexpected changes in camera orientation after deployment. The system automatically detects aircraft in video frames and compares their observed positions against positions predicted from ADS-B data. Persistent offsets can reveal that a camera has moved or requires recalibration. [MDPI]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

This turns routine air traffic into a continual health-check system. Instead of waiting for technicians to discover a problem, the observatory can use known aircraft tracks as a recurring benchmark for sensor performance. [MDPI]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

Why Calibration Comes Before Anomaly Claims

The broader purpose of aircraft-based calibration is methodological rather than operational. Galileo’s observatories are designed to build a census of normal aerial activity and identify outliers only after ordinary explanations have been rigorously tested. [The Galileo Project+2The Galileo Project]galileo.hsites.harvard.eduThe Galileo ProjectThe Scientific Investigation of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena…A primary objective of the Galileo Project is to buil…

Aircraft provide an unusually valuable calibration resource because they are abundant, independently tracked and measurable. A system that cannot consistently place known aircraft where they should appear in the sky cannot credibly claim to measure something extraordinary. Conversely, a system that repeatedly demonstrates accurate agreement between ADS-B tracks and camera observations gains evidence that its geometry, timing and tracking are functioning correctly. [MDPI+2World Scientific]mdpi.comThe ADS-B…

In that sense, ordinary aircraft are not merely clutter to be filtered out. They are one of the main tools Galileo uses to demonstrate that its observatories are producing calibrated, scientifically useful measurements. Only after that foundation is established does the search for genuinely unexplained events become meaningful.
