Why One Sensor Is Often Not Enough

A single camera record can stay ambiguous because it cannot separate object motion, sensor artefacts, reflections and missing range.

Introduction

A single video or sensor record can leave a reported unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP) genuinely unresolved without implying that the object itself is extraordinary. The central problem is that one sensor rarely measures enough independent information to distinguish between a real object’s motion, the observing platform’s own movement, optical artefacts, atmospheric effects, or simple uncertainty about distance. NASA’s 2023 Independent Study Team identified this lack of multiple measurements as one of the main reasons many UAP reports cannot be confidently classified, alongside poor calibration, incomplete metadata and the absence of baseline observations. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportIndeed, several apparent UAP have been demonstrated to be sensor artifacts once appropriate cali…

One Sensor illustration 1 For automated instrumented UFO detectors, this is a design lesson rather than a philosophical one. The objective is not merely to record unusual events but to collect enough independent measurements that common explanations can either be confirmed or eliminated. Until that happens, an “unresolved” case often reflects limits in the available data rather than evidence for an exotic phenomenon.

What a single recording can and cannot prove

A single camera provides a two-dimensional projection of a three-dimensional scene. It records brightness, colour or infrared intensity across an image, but usually does not measure how far away an object is. Without range, almost every estimate of size, speed and acceleration depends on assumptions.

This creates several unavoidable ambiguities.

  • A small nearby object may appear identical to a much larger distant one.
  • Apparent rapid motion may result from the camera platform moving rather than the target.
  • A change in viewing angle can create the illusion of sudden acceleration.
  • Camera zoom, stabilisation and image processing may alter the apparent behaviour of an object.

NASA’s report repeatedly stresses that many existing UAP records were never intended as scientific observations. They often lack verified information about camera settings, pointing direction, calibration, processing history and observing conditions, preventing reliable reconstruction of what actually occurred. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportIndeed, several apparent UAP have been demonstrated to be sensor artifacts once appropriate cali…

Even an apparently sharp image therefore answers surprisingly few questions by itself. It shows that something produced photons reaching the detector. It does not automatically establish the object’s distance, physical dimensions, velocity or origin.

Why distance is the missing measurement

Range is arguably the most important quantity missing from most single-sensor UAP observations.

Velocity depends on both angular motion across the image and distance. An object moving one degree across the camera’s field of view could be:

  • an insect a metre away,
  • a bird hundreds of metres away,
  • an aircraft kilometres away.

Without independent range measurement, each interpretation can produce very different estimates of speed while fitting the same recorded image.

The same uncertainty affects estimates of acceleration and manoeuvrability. Claims that an object executed extreme turns or impossible speeds frequently depend on assumed distance rather than directly measured distance. If the range estimate changes, the inferred performance may change dramatically as well.

The U.S. Department of Defense’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) has published explanatory material showing how forced perspective and parallax can produce misleading impressions of speed and motion when observers or sensors move relative to poorly constrained targets. How artefacts and reflections survive careful review

Some unresolved recordings remain ambiguous even after detailed analysis because several competing explanations remain consistent with the available evidence.

Optical reflections

Internal reflections between lens elements can generate bright spots or ghost images that move with camera orientation rather than with an external object. Unless camera geometry and lens characteristics are known, these artefacts can be difficult to eliminate completely.

Infrared systems introduce additional complications because reflections, detector blooming and thermal contrast may create shapes that do not correspond directly to physical structure.

Sensor processing

Modern cameras rarely preserve raw detector output.

Automatic exposure adjustment, digital sharpening, compression, stabilisation and noise reduction all modify recorded images. If investigators receive only a compressed video rather than original sensor data, distinguishing genuine features from processing artefacts becomes substantially harder.

NASA specifically notes that several apparent UAP have ultimately proved to be sensor artefacts once calibration and metadata became available. Atmospheric effects

Heat shimmer, haze, cloud edges and changing refractive conditions can distort apparent position and shape.

Because these effects vary over time, they may resemble object motion in short clips while leaving insufficient evidence to determine whether the movement originated in the atmosphere, the sensor or the observed object.

Why independent sensors change the problem

A second independent measurement does more than provide another opinion. It adds new geometry.

Two separated cameras observing the same target can estimate distance through triangulation if their positions and pointing directions are accurately known. Once range is measured, estimates of speed, altitude and acceleration become far more reliable.

Other sensor combinations solve different uncertainties.

This principle is well established outside UAP research. Multi-camera photogrammetry is widely used because multiple viewing angles overcome the depth ambiguity inherent in single images. Why unresolved does not mean unexplained

A common misunderstanding is to treat an unresolved UAP as evidence that ordinary explanations have been ruled out.

In practice, unresolved often means something narrower: the available data are insufficient to discriminate among several plausible explanations.

For example:

  • an object may be consistent with a balloon but lack enough range information for confirmation;
  • an apparent rapid manoeuvre may be compatible with parallax but impossible to prove from the available imagery;
  • a thermal signature may match several different object types because the sensor lacks sufficient spatial resolution.

AARO has publicly noted that some cases remain unresolved because technical information is incomplete rather than because anomalous performance has been demonstrated. Its published assessments also emphasise that ambiguity itself should not be interpreted as evidence of extraordinary technology. This distinction is central to scientific investigation. An unresolved classification measures uncertainty in the evidence, not necessarily unusual behaviour by the observed object.

What extra measurements would change the assessment

The weakness of a single sensor directly informs how automated detector systems should be designed.

The most valuable additions are not necessarily higher-resolution cameras but independent measurements that constrain competing explanations.

High-priority improvements include:

  • precise time synchronisation across all instruments;
  • two or more spatially separated cameras for triangulation;
  • calibrated optical and infrared imaging collected simultaneously;
  • accurate sensor orientation and platform motion recording;
  • local weather measurements;
  • automatic correlation with aircraft, satellite and astronomical databases;
  • preservation of raw sensor output together with complete metadata.

Several current scientific proposals for dedicated UAP observation systems adopt exactly this philosophy, advocating multimodal observatories that combine optical, infrared and other calibrated instruments rather than relying on isolated video clips. [arXiv]arxiv.orgThe Scientific Investigation of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Using Multimodal Ground-Based ObservatoriesMay 29, 2023…Published: May 29, 2023

For automated instrumented UFO detectors, the implication is straightforward. The goal is not simply to detect unusual objects more often. It is to reduce ambiguity by ensuring that future observations contain enough independent measurements that analysts can estimate range, eliminate artefacts, account for environmental conditions and determine whether an event represents an ordinary object, a sensor effect or a genuinely unexplained observation.
